- bronchodilators are not recommended for treatment of bronchiolitis in infants and children.
- mechanism of action is opening of constricted airways, which is ineffective in bronchiolitis which involves obstructed airways.
- American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Canadian Paediatric Society do not recommend using albuterol (salbutamol) in infants and children with bronchiolitis (AAP Strong recommendation, Level B).
- National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) does not recommend ipratropium bromide for treatment of bronchiolitis.
- Society of Hospital Medicine (pediatric hospital medicine) recommends against routinely using bronchodilators in children with bronchiolitis.
- Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids (TREKK) recommendations on bronchiolitis: in children < 12 months old with bronchiolitis and presenting to emergency department (ED), use of oral bronchodilators is not recommended.
