When a loading dose is given, the level is typically drawn 6–8 hours after the last dose.

For patients on maintenance therapy (without a loading dose), you should wait until steady state is reached—which usually takes 5–7 days of regular dosing—before checking a level.

Drawing a level too soon can yield false results.
