Concomitant use of phenobarbital (a CYP2C9/CYP2C19 inducer) with phenytoin (a CYP2C9/CYP2C19 substrate) may decrease phenytoin exposure, which may reduce the efficacy of phenytoin.
If concomitant use cannot be avoided, closely monitor neonates and consider increasing the phenytoin dosage accordingly (Prod Info SEZABY(TM) intravenous injection, 2022).
Concurrent phenobarbital and phenytoin therapy may increase, decrease, or cause no change in the serum levels of phenytoin (Hansten, 1974).
